Rotating video with vlc

Regularly I take videos in portrait mode on my Android phone. I have tried Avidemux to create a rotated version from them, but found it easier to rotate them while viewing with vlc. In the UI, there are two options for that:
Tools → Effects and filters → Video Effects → Basic → Transform
Tools → Effects and filters → Video Effects → Geometry → Rotate
I find it more efficient to apply the first option directly from the command line:
vlc --vout-filter=transform --transform-type=270
